Prime Minister Narendra Modi embraces and consoles tearful rocket scientist as India's ISRO Chandrayaan-2 moon lander is feared to have CRASHED into the surface after mission control lost contact
India's lunar lander appears to have failed in its attempt to reach the surface of the moon safely.
After what at first seemed a promising start to its descent, data for the Chandrayaan-2 mission's lander, Vikram, began to show 'wiggles' during its braking phase that signalled it may not have been headed for a smooth landing.
And moments later, communication with the craft was lost, leaving its fate up in the air.
There's now much uncertainty as to what actually happened as Vikram got closer to the surface, and whether it survived – though many suspect it crash-landed.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) says it plans to analyze the data to find out what went wrong.

I hope they are proud of themselves, India should really think about it's priorities, almost a quarter of the country live in poverty, 10% of the country in extreme poverty. Is sending a rocket to the moon worth it???

As one of the world's oldest and only continuing civilization, India pioneered in science whether it is Mathematics, astronomy, Ayurveda, etc. Einstein said, "We owe a lot to Indians, who taught us how to count. Without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made"

Now that millions of dollars in landing on the moon have been wasted, how about landing some basic sanitation and toilets for people desperately in need on earth (poor regions of India) and using Indian taxpayers a tad bit wisely?

This is a country with abject poverty, no social security to talk about and a net recipient of aid. Why are they spending an absolute fortune going to the moon?

They have a space program and nuclear weapons yet 400 million Indians do not have their own toilet- shameful state of affairs!

Perhaps India would do well to help its poor and marginalised people than to launch these landings at far greater expense.

A country that can waste so much money crashing junk into the moon but can't respect women's rights, provide basic sanitation for all or even clean water to a its people is an international disgrace.
Mikej85, London, United Kingdom, 4 hours ago
But if they need aid how can they afford a space program?
